Being in nature is good for us. A lot of recent research has helped us to understand how exposure to nature can help our mental and physical health. However, many people do not have regular access to nature nor an appreciation for nature, and this comes at the same time as our planet struggles with issues such as climate change, habitat loss, and increasing numbers of humans.
Swansea University is developing a participatory learning programme for Ugandan and Welsh children to understand what nature means to them. Participating classes will be paired up, one from each country, and the completed activities will be exchanged. Sharing their learnings with each other will allow the children to gain a deeper understanding of the benefits nature can bring to people across the world.
Our research aims:
1. What primary school children understand by the concept of ‘nature’
2. Why and how primary school children connect with their definition of nature
3. How the concept of and connection to nature differs across children from different countries
